A Better Race

Reminder: You love living in Humboldt.

It's not always easy, but you know it's the right thing to do. Sure, you've fantasized about what it might be like to migrate to Portland or Seattle or whatever city first wowed you with functioning, convenient public transportation. Perks? If you lived there you would never again have to endure a six-hour drive and crash on the couch your jerk, Humboldt-abandoning "friend" just to see Arcade Fire, for crissakes. City livin'. It sounds kinda unbeatable sometimes.

But then your training kicks in: "Why, we're not missing anything by living here. Life behind the Redwood Curtain is as abundant and fulfilling as any place on earth! Look at them big trees! You couldn't pay me enough to go join that rat race! Out there!"

Inner crisis delayed. Well played, Humboldtian.

Speaking of races, how 'bout instead participating in one that allows you some quality time in those giant woody things that restrict your soul from ever truly leaving here. Starting bright and early at 9 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 16, the Six Rivers Running Club presents the 33rd Annual Humboldt Redwoods Marathon, Half Marathon and 5K -- a great way to double-down on the "Humboldt dream." Yes, it requires physical exertion, but it takes place along the scenic Avenue of the Giants -- you know, one of those really great places close to home that you don't get to enough. They even close the route to traffic for runners -- and walkers! -- from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. No car dodging!

Does the thought of running past monstrous trunks appeal? Sign up, athlete! Go to to register. You live here. Make the most of it.
