Whacking at the wild cucumber

(sounds elegant

is not edible)

actually--

beautiful at first glance

until realizing

it is evil cousin to leprous

kudzu of the humid south

covering covering

with ivy tentacles

whacking

whacking

freeing the blackberries

feral orange lilies

and nectarine tree branches

from its grips

hacking and uprooting

in the woods behind the water cistern

endless twining

stung by nettles,

my hands feel how easily the forest could take over--

why humans paved roads

built cities

void

for fear of such green treachery
