Hoping for a Splash

As a volunteer treasurer for the Scotia Swim Team, I am truly heartened to hear that such a plan is in the works ("The Deep End," June 30). We do not have an Olympic-size pool in this area for teams to qualify for meets. In the last five years, we have lost many of our young people to areas where there is competitive swimming. It is extremely difficult to find qualified people for swim coach jobs.
With this new pool, they would get many offers for meets and programs. Subsequently we would attract more possible coaches and many more young people interested in competitive swimming. And of course the number one priority is that there would be a grand place for children and adults to learn to swim!!!! We live in an area that is in need of swim lessons on a regular basis. Our rivers pose great dangers to many people.
So I hear it has many hurdles, but it is a very, very worthy cause that I hope we can get many businesses and people to contribute to. It is extremely sad CR and Eureka closed their pools, but their pools were old and in need of major retrofits. It is always less costly to build a new pool, and although I am aware it is very expensive, it is a great idea whose time has come!!!!
