Take a whiff, HumCo. You smell that? (sniff) Ahh, yes. Harvest is upon us.
And as everyone knows, the place to hang with your buds during the Humboldt harvest season -- the center of the universe, as it were -- is sunny Fortuna. Take another hearty inhale. Oh, yeah. You can already taste the burn-the-roof-of-your-mouth-off-hot apple fritters. The apple pie that burrows a home in your gut, rendering you useless for the remainder. The cider that makes you wonder why any other liquids are necessary. If you can't tell, I really like apples.
Oh, oops. You did know I meant "apple" harvest, right? No? My bad.
It's once again time for the annual Apple Harvest Festival, which takes over multiple swaths of the "friendly city" this Saturday, Oct. 1, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Make like Adam and/or Eve and chomp.
As the Kool and the Gang-tinged celebratory clip that stormed YouTube last week surprisingly proved, Fortuna knows how to get down (or at least gives it the ol' college try). Here's the breakdown of what the town that produced Humboldt's first successful viral video has in store for you this weekend, grouped by location.
CLENDENEN'S CIDER WORKS: The hub of the festival, the day's highlights include music from the Scotia Band (11 a.m.) and Falling Rocks (noon), special applewood barbecue and highly memorable apple orchard hay wagon rides. You'll be so enchanted that the name "Clendenan" will forever be associated with pure goodness in your brain. Have some cider and vote for Clif!
MAIN STREET: Food. Lots of it. This is the place to load up on your fritters, crisps and pies. There'll also be local artisan booths aplenty, a kids' bounce house and music by The Compost Mountain Boys (10 a.m.) and Swingin' Country (2 p.m.).
ROHNER PARK: Highlights include the competitive seventh annual Dutch Oven Cook-off and music by Melange at noon. If you need to get rid of the kids for the night, dump 'em at the Fireman's Pavilion at 5 p.m. for a special Apple Harvest Skate Night.
REDWOOD VILLAGE SHOPPING CENTER: Your kids will want to go here. The obligatory wax hand booth, hayrides, pony rides, more bounce houses, balloon animals and music by Rock Review (noon).
STRONGS CREEK PLAZA: Your kids might want to go here. Shriners clowns -- possibly creepy, never know with clowns -- Smokey Bear, face painting, fire truck tours, petting zoo and Darth Vader -- again, kinda scary.
RAY'S FOOD PLACE: Your kids will be too tired to go here. But in the interest of being complete we'll mention there'll be another petting zoo there.
Steve Jobs may have retired, but apples are still strong. For more info on the Apple Harvest Festival, check out sunnyfortuna.com. Yum!
