Now you youngsters won't remember this, but right here in Humboldt County people used to to do this weird thing called "logging." Say it with me now: law-ging. If you need help remembering that, keep in mind that it rhymes with blogging. You'll be fine.

Why did people -- they were called lumberjacks, like the HSU football team uncoincidently -- do this "logging?" What was it? Well, basically people would cut down trees -- settle down -- and use the wood to make things. Believe it or not, odds are the very house you live in is made predominantly out of wood. No joke!

Of course locally the lumberjacks have gone the way of the dodo -- dodos went to China, right? But hey, if you're curious and would like to experience the ancient "logging" art form, you're in luck.

The fine people at the Redwood Lake Resort -- it's about six miles north of Trinidad State Beach -- are hosting Loggerfest this Saturday, Sept. 3. from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. You'll be witnessing a piece of living history -- like a burlier, hairier, less creepy Civil War reenactment gathering.

The day is packed with loggery goodness, but the main event is the logging sports exhibition. One of America's top ranked logging teams -- we didn't check the ranking, but why would you lie about that -- will show off their pole climbing, crosscut sawing, birding (log rolling), log chopping and axe throwing skills. In short, piss these dudes off and risk log treatment. They tough.

Also on the days agenda: chainsaw carving (that's logger art), a sawdust pile to play in (guess where the sawdust comes from), hayrides, potato sack races, tug of war, a watermelon eating contest, barbecue and music by the No Good Redwood Ramblers and Swingin' Country.
