Due to a data input error, today's Journal has an incorrect start time for Friday's Amy Stewart reading at College of the Redwoods. Songstresss Lila Nelson will sing starting at 6:30 p.m. before Stewart reads.

CR’s Visiting Writers Series presents New York Times best-selling local author Amy Stewart Friday, Oct. 3
Singer/songwriter Lila Nelson opens the show

Internationally acclaimed author Amy Stewart will re-launch College of the Redwoods’ Visiting [Writers] Series with a free reading at the Forum Theater on the main Eureka campus Friday, Oct. 3 starting at 7 p.m.
Stewart will read from her latest book "Flower Confidential: The Good, Bad and the Beautiful in the Business of Flowers" and her newest work-in-progress  "Wicked Plants: A Book of Botanical Atrocities," which will be published by Algonquin Books in May 2009.
Stewart will sell and sign copies of her three books in the Forum Theater lobby following her performance.
Stewart’s reading will be preceded by a musical performance from 6:30 to 7 p.m. by Humboldt County singer-songwriter Lila Nelson who just released her newest CD " Letter Home ."
"I’m excited to be a part of CR’s Visiting Writers series," Stewart said. "CR has presented many distinguished writers in the past and it’s an honor to be part of that tradition."
Stewart, a Eureka resident, has had three books published by Algonquin Books . "Flower Confidential" made the New York Times Bestseller list . On Stewart’s website , it is described as "an around-the-world, behind-the-scenes look at the flower industry and how it has sought – for better and worse – to achieve perfection."
The Boston Globe wrote of "Flower Confidential": "Revelatory...informative at every level...and commendably fair-minded. Stewart shows in stunning detail that every aspect of producing flowers for the cut-flower market has been abstracted into its elements."
Stewart’s essays and commentaries have appeared in the New York Times, the San Francisco Chronicle, Garden Design and Organic Gardening. She’s been featured on National Public Radio, Good Morning America and CBS Sunday Morning. The National Endowment for the Arts granted her a Creative Writing Fellowship for 2006.
Stewart’s second book was "The Earth Moved: On the Remarkable Achievements of Earthworms." The New York Times called it "a completely original combination of science and passion.
Her debut book was "From the Ground Up: The Story of a first Garden." The Sacramento Bee described it as: "An immensely readable book about learning, creating and enjoying the garden and life."
Stewart is the co-owner, with her husband Scott Brown, of Eureka Books, an antiquarian bookstore located on Second Street in Old Town Eureka.
