Condor Dreamin'

The Yurok Tribe met yesterday and meets again today to talk about reintroducing the California condor to the lower Klamath River Basin, says the Medford Mail Tribune.

Oregon hunters are wary:

Studies show the chief limiting factor to condor recovery is lead poisoning, and the most common source of that lead is the ingestion of bullet fragments in the carcasses and gut piles left by hunters.

California bans lead bullets. But the birds would no doubt migrate into Oregon, say the worriers who fear more hunting restrictions, where the last time a condor was sighted was 105 years ago.

The California condor -- "pregonish" in Yurok, Gymnogyps californianus in Latin -- is endangered, with 149 in captivity and 172 in the wild.
