Pedaling for the Climate

carbon emissions Got any plans for the Saturday before Halloween? If not, walk, cycle or Segway (?) over to the Arcata Plaza and you, yes you , can become a human pixel in a giant formation of the number 350. Said photo, along with snapshots of many other human 350s taken around the world, will be displayed on the big screens in Times Square and projected at the United Nations headquarters in Copenhagen, Denmark -- the cumulative effect of which will (if all goes according to plan) convince world leaders that now, yes now , is the time for serious action on climate change. (The significance of the number 350 can be found here .)

Local sustainability consultants GreenWay Partners , in conjunction with the North Coast Growers Asssociation Farmers Market, are sponsoring the local event in an effort "to raise awareness ... and to identify local impacts we expect to see from a changing climate," according to a press release. The group is also hosting 15 cyclists who will be pedaling their bikes from Arcata next Monday and arriving in San Francisco the following Saturday, which, BTW, is The International Day of Climate Action.

Local cyclists can show their support by accompanying the cyclists on the first 10 miles or so, departing the GreenWay offices (on the corner of 8th and N) at 7:30 a.m. Monday moring, proceeding along Highway 101 and culminating at the gazebo in Old Town, where unspecified "leaders" will welcome the amateur peloton . reasons (reasonably) that focusing on a clear and specific goal (namely, reducing carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to less than 350 parts per million) will "help move negotiations in the direction science and justice demand."
