Officials are investigating the death of an inmate inside the Humboldt County Correctional Facility.

According to a news release from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office, at 2:40 p.m. on June 13 Eureka Police arrested the 42-year-old man “for being under the influence of alcohol and or drugs” and brought him to the jail. There, says the release, he “was medically cleared by jail staff and was placed into a sobering safety cell by himself.”

“Correctional Officers conducted 15-minute cell checks on the male subject, per their policy,” says the release. “At about 4 p.m., a correctional officer noticed the male was unresponsive and may not be breathing. The correctional officer and jail medical staff immediately began life saving measures which included CPR. The Eureka Fire Department and an ambulance were immediately notified and responded to the correctional facility.”

Paramedics arrived and at 4:16 p.m. took the man to the hospital, where a doctor pronounced him dead.

The name of the deceased man has not been released, pending notification of relatives.

Humboldt County Coroner Dave Parris said Monday afternoon there will be an autopsy. The Sheriff’s Office and Humboldt County District Attorney’s Office are also investigating the death.
