The Arcata City Council voted unanimously tonight in favor of a proposed “Medical Marijuana Innovation Area” to be zoned on West End Road at the site of the former Humboldt Flakeboard Mill and a nearby city-owned property.

The approval starts a public hearing process at the Planning Commission level, where there will be further discussions about how to move forward with the proposed cultivation, warehousing and processing facility that will likely include a community kitchen for marijuana infused foods.

The proposal was largely praised by marijuana advocates who spoke on the issue, though it wasn’t without some concerns from members of the council and public.

The Journal will follow up on the council meeting in more detail soon, but you can read more about the proposal here and read the staff report here.
