Starting today, everyone in California, ages 3 and older, is mandated to wear face coverings in “high risk” public situations indoors and outside, with limited exceptions that include health issues.

The California Department of Public Health said in an announcement that the requirement is effective today. Facial coverings have been the law of the land in Humboldt County since late April.

“Over the last four months, we have learned a lot about COVID-19 transmission, most notably that people who are infected but are asymptomatic or presymptomatic play an important part in community spread,” the release states. “The use of face coverings by everyone can limit the release of infected droplets when talking, coughing, and/or sneezing, as well as reinforce physical distancing.”
