The Eureka office of the National Weather Service is warning beachgoers to be extra cautious over the next few days, with breaking waves upward of 25 feet possible along west-northwest facing beaches.

The long-period swell being produced by a cyclone over the Gulf of Alaska is also expected to produce 20-foot seas on Wednesday.

“These large waves can be erratic and unpredictable. Use extra caution near the surf zone as these large waves will be capable of sweeping people into the frigid and turbulent ocean water,” the NWS high surf advisory in effect from 10 p.m. Tuesday to 8 a.m. Thursday states. “Mariners traversing the bar are urged to exercise extreme caution or stay in port until the threat subsides.”
