Rain ushered in the New Year in Humboldt County, the first of a series of storm systems expected to hit the North Coast in coming days.
According to the Eureka office of the National Weather Service, Monday is forecast to see gusty winds and heavy rain but snow levels are expected to stay at elevations over 5,000 feet.
Meanwhile, a high surf advisory remains in effect until 11 p.m. Saturday as large waves in the 22- to 25-foot range hit the coast. Beachgoers are advised to stay back from the surf and avoid jetties or rocks. And, while the breakers are expected to decrease in size by Sunday, the waves will likely still be around 18 to 20 feet until Monday morning.
