CSU to Require COVID-19 Vaccines in Fall as Long as FDA Grants Full Approval

The California State University system, which includes Humboldt State University, announced today that all faculty, staff and students who go to a campus this fall will need to be fully vaccinated for COVID-19, with certain conditions.

The requirement is contingent on the federal Food and Drug Administration granting full approval to one or more of the vaccines and, as with other CSU vaccine requirements, students and employees are able to apply for a medical or religious exemption.

“Together, the CSU and UC enroll and employ more than one million students and employees across 33 major university campuses, so this is the most comprehensive and consequential university plan for COVID-19 vaccines in the country," CSU Chancellor Joseph I. Castro said in a news release. “Consistent with previous CSU announcements related to the university's response to the pandemic, we are sharing this information now to give students, their families and our employees ample time to make plans to be vaccinated prior to the start of the fall term."

A news release from HSU notes this is a CSU decision that applies to all campuses.

"Humboldt State University is still working out the details of the requirement for our campus," the news release states. "We encourage everyone to get vaccinated as soon as possible for the safety of themselves and the community, and to prepare for this requirement."

Meanwhile, local health officials are raising concerns about a dramatic drop in residents receiving the vaccine, which has left the county facing difficulties in filling available appointments.

Just last week, Humboldt County Public Health sent some 1,000 doses down to the Bay Area. At the same time, Humboldt recorded 28 new COVID-19 cases yesterday, the most since Feb. 11.

For those interested, the Arcata Community Center has a walk-in vaccination clinics on a first come, first served basis from 6 to 7 p.m. today through Sunday.

The California State University today announced that beginning this Fall, all faculty, staff and students who access campus facilities will be required to be immunized against COVID-19. The requirement will be conditional upon full approval of one or more vaccines by the FDA.

This is a CSU decision and will be required of all campuses in the system. Consistent with the CSU’s policy for other required vaccinations, the COVID-19 vaccination requirement would allow for students or employees to seek an exemption based on medical or religious grounds. 

Humboldt State University is still working out the details of the requirement for our campus. We encourage everyone to get vaccinated as soon as possible for the safety of themselves and the community, and to prepare for this requirement.

Humboldt County Public Health has opened vaccinations to those over 16 years old.

If you have not yet been vaccinated and aren’t currently working with HSU Student Health & Wellbeing Services to receive a vaccine at a local pharmacy, you can sign up through MyTurn.ca.gov. See information in the County press release below: 

All Humboldt County residents age 16 and over can now sign up for COVID-19 vaccination appointments through My Turn. This includes people with or without medical conditions and from all sectors and occupations.

Residents age 18 and over can go to MyTurn.ca.gov to schedule an appointment. Public Health officials encourage people to sign up quickly for the first appointment available.

The only vaccine approved for 16- and 17-year-olds is made by Pfizer. My Turn is not currently designed to screen clinics based on age, so residents must select a Pfizer clinic when registering. The next Pfizer clinic is scheduled for Wednesday, April 14.

Additional requirements for 16- and 17-year-olds to receive COVID-19 vaccination include the following:

  • A parent or guardian must accompany the vaccine recipient to the clinic and sign a consent form in person.

  • Proof of age is required. Vaccine recipients must be at least 16 years old at the time of vaccination.

Those who are unable to meet these requirements will be turned away from clinic sites.
