The San Jose State University football team is heading back to Humboldt to prepare for the upcoming season.

According to a Humboldt State University news release, all of the athletes, staff and coaches are fully vaccinated and will follow "general safety practices" while living and practicing on campus.

The team is slated to arrive tomorrow and stay until Aug. 8. The HSU release states that the campus has been in contact with Public Heath about the arrangement and the Spartans will essentially maintain a bubble "to prevent contact between the team, the campus, and the local community."

The Spartans' arrival last year was marked by controversy, with local health officials "disappointed" by the decision to bring the 140 member group to Humboldt after COVID-19 restrictions in Santa Clara County prevented the team from practing there.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for the Spartans to prepare for their season in the beautiful Redwood Bowl,” Executive Director of Intercollegiate Athletics & Campus Recreation Cooper Jones said in the release. “We’re glad to assist San José State as they kick off the 2021 season with fall camp in Arcata. After last year’s safe visit, and a very successful season for SJSU, we are happy to invite them back and support the team this semester.”

The San Jose State University team will have access to the Redwood Bowl, with use of the Student Recreation Center limited to off-hours to allow HSU students to use the facility. News of the team's return comes on the same day the California State system announced students, staff and faculty will be required in fall to be vaccinated to be on campus.

According to HSU, the public will be invited to an Aug. 7 scrimmage game, with more details to be released at a later date.

HSU has been in close contact with Humboldt County Health regarding this agreement and will continue to adhere to county, state, and CDC guidelines.
