Hops in Humboldt is the latest in a long list of local events to postpone or cancel in recent days as local COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations surge due to the Delta variant but the Humboldt County Fair Association's board has voted to go forward with next week's opening day.

So far this week, Humboldt County has seen 307 confirmed COVID-19 cases, with four local residents dying since Aug. 3. Amid this spike, Humboldt County Health Officer Ian Hoffman reinstated a mask mandate, which went into effect on Aug. 7, and local health officials have urged people to avoid large gatherings in an effort to stem the virus' spread and preserve capacity at local hospitals.

In a release, Hops for Humboldt says that while the Fortuna event that dates back nearly two decades was slated to be scaled down for safety reasons, the decision was made this week to join "many other local events that have voluntarily canceled."

Since 2003, the nonprofit has awarded more than $750,000 in grants to schools, youth groups, senior services, drug and alcohol prevention, community projects and scholarships for local high school and college students with proceeds from the beer-tasting bash.

"We are hopeful that this coming year will bring the world the strength we need to get COVID-19 under control and all of us back to the lives that we miss and love," the Hops' release states.

The Humboldt County Fair, meanwhile, is still on track to start Aug. 18, according to a Facebook post, with attendees being required to wear masks and additional protocols for social distancing and sanitization, including carnival rides being cleaned after each turn. There will also be a COVID-19 vaccination center onsite for all 11 days, the post states.

Over the last 18 years Hops in Humboldt has been the place to come to try some of the best breweries in the country right here in Humboldt County. Hops has been the place to taste the best brews of the summer and get to know the amazing stories of the hardworking brewers behind their labels. It’s a place to sip and discover something different, fall in love with a new flavor and meet new friends. With good vibes, friendly volunteers and tasty suds, Hops is the perfect festival to end the warm days of summer.

Last year the COVID-19 pandemic took center stage in the world and we saw almost all of our favorite events canceled or reimagined into a virtual experience. This year we thought we were slowly coming away from the pandemic as we quietly sat back and watched California open back up. After June 15th Hops made the decision to scale the event back to a quarter of attendees and plan a VIP only event with low attendance that we felt we could pull off safely. We jumped in with booth feet and started planning like crazy and well folks…we almost made it. These last few weeks Humboldt has seen the Delta variant skyrocket locally and across the globe.

As much as the Hops in Humboldt committee wanted to make a comeback, we are jumping on board with the many other local events that have voluntarily canceled. We would like to thank the many breweries who offered us their support and the hundreds of Hops fans who purchased a VIP ticket to Hops in Humboldt 2021. We will be issuing a full refund to ticket holders and vendors in the coming days and thank you for all of your support ❤️. Hops has been around since 2003 as a non-profit with an all volunteer committee and 100% of the annual Micro-Brew Festival proceeds are given back to local groups who fall under our five grant categories. To date over $750,000 dollars in grants have been awarded to schools, youth groups, senior services, drug and alcohol prevention, community projects and scholarships for local high school and college students. Cheers to your beer money! We are hopeful that this coming year will bring the world the strength we need to get COVID-19 under control and all of us back to the lives that we miss and love. We are looking forward to Hops in Humboldt 2022 and hope to see you there, CHEERS!
