The city of Eureka condemned The Royal Inn, a motel on the 1100 block of Fifth Street, today after finding during an inspection yesterday that conditions there "posed a significant hazard" to occupants and the surrounding community.

"During the course of the inspection, code enforcement personnel catalogued numerous violations of the Eureka Municipal Code, California Building Code and Health and Safety Code, including hazardous electrical work, leaking plumbing, rotten stairs and structural members, rooms contaminated with blood, urine and feces, severe mold issues, infestation of rats, cockroaches and bedbugs, fire hazards and other violations," a press release states.

It's unclear how many residents were displaced by the city's action, which left the property vacant and boarded up.

City staff worked with various organizations and local housing providers "to immediately relocate the most at-risk individuals and to provide relocation assistance to residence of the motel," with the costs of the assistance, staff time and contractors and materials billed to the property owner.
