The door is closing for candidates interested in entering a slew of local races in the upcoming November election, with dozens of seats on the boards of special districts and school boards across Humboldt County, as well as city councils, going before voters.

The candidate filing period ends today unless an incumbent chooses not to run again, which extends the filing period to Aug. 17.

In Arcata, two of the council’s five seats are up for election while Eureka has a full slate on the ballot, including the seats representing Ward 1, Ward 3 and Ward 5 as well as the position of mayor. Councilmembers Kim Bergel and Natalie Arroyo are termed out (with Arroyo moving over to the Board of Supervisors’ dais) and Mayor Susan Seaman has already declared that she will not seek a second term.

In Blue Lake, two four-year seats and two two-year seats are up for election, while Trinidad has three full-terms on the ballot as do Rio Dell and Fortuna.

In Ferndale, two four-year council seats and a two-year term as mayor are on the table with the city already announcing that the filing period will run through Aug. 17.
