EPA: Eureka Seafood Processing Plant Fined $75K Over Sewage Violations

Seafood processing plant Pacific Seafoods-Eureka will pay a $74,500 penalty for discharging wastewater into the City of Eureka's sewer system, according to a press release from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). "During a 2018 inspection with the North Coast Regional Water Quality Control Board and Eureka’s Public Works Department, EPA found the company discharged wastewater directly to the Eureka Slough waterway without the appropriate permit," the press release states.

City Asking Eureka Residents to Extend, Increase Local Sales Tax

The Eureka City Council voted unanimously earlier this week to bring the matter to the ballot, with city officials saying the resulting funds would continue to be directed toward maintaining essential services, including the city’s police and fire departments as well as youth, senior and homeless services, community health care, parks and recreation and road repair. A survey of likely Eureka voters conducted by EMC Research, an independent public outreach firm, found overwhelming support for the proposed measure, according to the staff report.

Face masks and hand sanitizer, will be distributed to local small businesses under 50 employees, free of charge thanks to a contribution from the Governor's Office of Emergency Services and the Office of the Small Business Advocate. Nearly 3,000 gallons of hand sanitizer and 400,000 face masks were received in Humboldt County, to be distributed by Arcata Economic Development Corporation (AEDC).

In step with the recent, mandated closures of California's indoor restaurants, movie theaters, museums, zoos and other businesses, Blue Lake Casino again shuttered its doors on July 16, the Times-Standard has reported. The Blue Lake Rancheria Tribe had only reopened the casino four days prior, on July 12, after keeping it closed due to the pandemic since the middle of March.
