Summer/Fall 2019

Naturalists — You’re just in time for Humboldt summer, that late season where the sun warms our hills and beaches into October. Coastal temperatures don’t sizzle like they do inland but you should put on sunblock nonetheless — telling people back home you got a sunburn in famously foggy Humboldt will get you no sympathy. As for what to do while you’re here, the Insider is full of ideas.

In this issue’s Perfect Trips, we invite you to make the most of the weather: Dip your toes in gentle swimming holes, paddle kayaks to remote camps, take in some outdoor art and toast your good company on a sunset cocktail cruise aboard a historic vessel. If you’re looking for some river time, the little city of Rio Dell is worth a look. Mayor Debra Garnes fell in love with the place and reading our profile of this “city girl” who’s gone all-in on simple, small-town life might inspire you to pack up the car for a quick trip.

If you’re up for rougher water, Willow Creek is where it’s at. We’ve got the lowdown on river rafting tours as well as a few pro tips in our Adventure column. Read it before you put your paddle in the water and don’t forget that sunblock.

Back in Arcata, mellow sounds are wafting up from old-school jazz lounge The Basement, where you can lean back on a couch with a French 75 cocktail while listening to some Ella Fitzgerald covers. And in Eureka, vintage revival North of Fourth offers similarly swanky drinks with a little more vitamin D out back, where the patio is bursting with flowers.

Don’t worry, we won’t let you go hungry. We’ll take you to newcomer Delish on 5th to explore its vast selection of upscale deli offerings, by the pound from the case or in the form of photo-worthy sandwiches and bakery treats. There’s also Fregoso’s Comida Mexicana, with its fresh takes on traditional dishes — try the Margarita with Tajin or the chile relleno molcajete and let them open your mind to the possibilities.

Keep the summer going with some cocktail ware to take back with you. Peruse our spread of glasses, shakers and fanciful glass straws and see what strikes your fancy. You’ve got time to use them — summer’s not close to finished in Humboldt.

Cheers.
