The spring rain has eased off, the sun is out and the grass is lush — Humboldt is picnic primed. Pack up a basket and a blanket, and let’s go. How about a bluff overlooking the sea? Maybe a riverside location or a view of Humboldt Bay? “Shipwrecks, Rivers and Railroads” will show you the way to some of the most scenic places to spread out a blanket, uncork and unwind. In this issue’s Perfect Trips, there are even more al fresco options, from the massive redwood Picnic Tree to an oyster bed tour with sampling from the sea. Back in town, take in outdoor art on a mural tour through Eureka, peruse Native American basketry and Victoriana at the Blue Lake Museum, or visit the Humboldt Room, where history buffs swoon over the collection and the view of the bay. Speaking of collections, in Just Browsing we’ll swing by the Scruffy Nerd Herder and thumb through the racks of comics with the hardcore aficionados. And just so you don’t feel like you don’t know anybody, we’ll introduce you to local Natalie Arroyo — city councilmember, Coastie, musician and menace on the roller derby track. (Nothing says Humboldt like having layers.) She shares some recommendations for having a good time on the North Coast that you should definitely take. In the event of rain, which has been known to fall on our green landscape, there’s always Wildberries, with just the market patio on which to take shelter and sustenance. And when night falls, you can score a table at French fusion restaurant Le Monde or a coveted counter seat at Sushi Spot. We’ll even help you order.
