I would like to throw out yet another reason why Ms. Hodgson's gun control stance ("Tipping Point?," Dec. 10) is like the old saw, "there are a thousand people hacking away at the branches of the tree of inequity, for every one hacking at its roots."
A major contributor to a violent society is the death of the family. Single parent families and actually millions of young males with no father or male mentor. This being an incredibly violent culture by definition (football, mixed martial arts, boxing, world's biggest military, gangs, etc.), these young males have only the violent images from the movies (where guns are present in at least half the films), the government (which wages the endless war), and a police presence which is being revealed as quick to kill. Violence/apple pie, get it?
