'Tis that time of year again! Time to partake in everybody's favorite symbolically Pagan tradition somehow co-opted into a Christian holiday; the hunt for brightly colored byproducts of the chicken reproductive system. Easter is precious.
Now you could hide eggs at your own house solely for your own children to find. But if we've learned anything from youth sports it's that losing and being humiliated in public builds character. With that in mind, here are some places you can unleash your offspring to compete with other young egg-seekers so they can earn your love:
Saturday: A good day-early warm-up: The Fortuna Lions Club hosts an egg hunt in Rohner Park on Saturday at 9 a.m. The fun doesn't end there, though. At 10 a.m., Fortuna's Main Street will host its annual Downtown Spring Fling with plenty of carnival-ish games and distractions for the youngsters.
Also on Saturday in the Eel River Valley, head down to Fireman's Park in Ferndale at 10:30 a.m. for an egg dash. These eggs should be especially hard to find since they're hidden by the Ferndale Scouts -- kids are more meticulous about egg hiding, you know.
Not only does the McKinleyville Chamber of Commerce sponsor its own morning egg hunt at the McKinleyville Shopping Center, but from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. kids have the opportunity to play a human-sized version of Candyland in Pierson Park. Sweet.
Arcata? Do you have something going on? (We're unsure, but you'll find farm fresh eggs in some booths at the Farmers' Market Saturday morning.)
Sunday: On Easter Sunday it's likely your kids will never forgive you if you don't hit up the annual Great Zoo Egg-stravaganza at the Sequoia Park Zoo from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Not only are there egg-finding opportunities, crafting ops, face painting and other games, but you'll have the chance to witness the zoo residents receive their Easter treats. Can a Red Panda digest a Cadbury Egg? You'll have to go to find out.
Finally, if you just can't, can't bear another Easter event geared solely at kids, the Far North Climbing Gym in Arcata is hosting a day of dance workshops -- including Samba, West African, poi, tribal bellydance, and aerial silk styles -- and a special performance from AerialDanceCircus called "A Jungle Show" at 4:24 p.m. $5 gets you in the door. And, oh yes, they have an egg hunt too. Starts at noon.
Or you could go to church.
