FIRST RAIN for Sylvie

The rains came
and you—who have known
only a handful of winters—
danced on the side
of the road
arms raised
palms open
welcoming the glory
of it all

while I, with more than
seventy first rains
behind me
watched out for traffic
and opened my heart
to your joy.
