Author Tammy Durston presents “Northern California’s Lost Coast” at the Humboldt County Historical Society program meeting on Saturday, May 6 at 1:00 p.m., in the first-floor conference room of the Humboldt County Library, 1313 Third Street, Eureka. Admission is free and everyone is invited. Welcome to one of the last undeveloped stretches of the California coastline! Tammy Durston will present a PowerPoint show of historical photographs based her new book, “Northern California’s Lost Coast.” With mountains that rise thousands of feet from the sea, the Lost Coast is the only significant stretch of California coastline without a highway. This secluded landscape was once home to the Coast Yuki, Sinkyone, Mattole, and Wiyot tribes. With the incursion Euro-American settlers in the mid-1800s, the area underwent a period of industrial development. Its own rugged remoteness, however, prevented such development from flourishing. The Lost Coast was left to return to nature and is now protected as the Sinkyone Wilderness. Join Tammy Durston for a history in pictures of the famed Lost Coast.
