Former First District Humboldt County Supervisor Jimmy Smith and wife, Jacque, presented Jack Mays with a resolution signed by the board of supervisors at Mays' 2005 "Party in the Vineyard" at the Humboldt County Fairgrounds. The event raised funds for Mays' medical care after he was diagnosed in late 2004 with stage four kidney cancer. Mays and Smith have a special relationship as fellow cancer survivors.

Jack Mays and his daughter Marcia Manker at a 2005 fundraiser held in his honor. Manker is CEO of Orange Coast Memorial Medical Center in Fountain Valley, Calif., where Mays traveled frequently for chemotherapy.
