  • Located west of Dublin, Ireland, the Birr Leviathan was the world's largest telescope from 1845 to 1917. Its designer, William Parsons (standing by the eyepiece) made the first observation of "spirality" in a nebula in April 1848, thus giving birth to cosmology as an empirical science.
