Memorial Lighthouse Ceremony

When: Sun., May 29, 2 p.m. 2016

Dana Hope will be mistress of ceremonies. The program begins with bagpipe music by Matthew Marshall followed by the flag ceremony and pledge of allegiance led by McKinleyville Scout Troop #99 and the Girl Scouts Redwood Service Unit. Trinidad Civic Club co-presidents Dana Hope and Tonda Ferrando will welcome guests. the Reverend Dr. Susan Armstrong, Christ Episcopal Church, Eureka, will give the invocation and Dee Hemingway will sing "We'll Meet Again." A United States Coast Guard representative will present remarks and a poem by the late Ned Simmons called "Elegy at the Trinidad Memorial Lighthouse" from Ned's "Crystalizations" will be read. Mayor Dwight Miller will ring the historic 1898 bronze fog bell. Janine Volkmar will read the 234 memorial names. Saxophonist Matthew Brogdon, who has participated in 20 of the 21 ceremonies over the years, will play "Taps" and the program, approximately 35 minutes in length, will end with a USCG helicopter flyover. Flowers compliments of Sun Valley Floral Farm and Leny Macy and her wreath committee. Sound by Eric Hann of Ceremony Sound. Programs by Jason Richie. There is no seating at the site. Comfortable shoes recommended. Access ways very uneven. Please be careful. The ceremony takes place rain or shine.
