Restitution Ordered in Jennings Case



From the District Attorney's office, news that Alan Bear has been ordered to pay the family of Greg Jennings a quarter of a million dollars in restitution. Bear struck and killed Jennings while the latter was riding his bicycle along Highway 299 in August 2008.

In September 2009, under strange circumstances, Bear pleaded guilty to one reduced charge of misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter. He was sentenced to one year in jail.

Today in Humboldt Superior Court Judge W. Bruce Watson entered an Order for Restitution in the amount of $243,842.00 in the case against Alan Bear, also known as Martin Alan Kinder. On September 3, 2009; Mr. Bear was convicted of Vehicular Manslaughter upon his plea of no contest to in the death of Mr. Greg Jennings and was sentenced to a year in jail. Mr. Bear struck and killed Mr. Jennings while Mr. Jennings was riding his bicycle along State Route 299 near Blue Lake.

The Restitution Order results from a motion filed by the District Attorney's office. The figure represents lost economic support to Mr. Jennings surviving widow for a period of five years following Mr. Jennings' death. That five year basis was recently approved in another vehicular manslaughter case before the California Supreme Court.
